The Victoria Police was formally established on 8 January 1853 from an existing colonial police force of 875 men. The first appointment as Chief Commissioner was William Henry Fancourt Mitchell.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) was formed in 1977 to deal with the most dangerous and high-risk incidents that occur in the Capitol Regional District. The original team was made up of eight members - four from Saanich Police and four from Victoria City Police. Today the team includes 14 members from any of the Greater Victoria Area Police Agencies.

In November 2007 as a result of ammendments made to legislation governing the transit authority, their name was changed to South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service. The service was created to address jurisdictional issues associated to the transit system covering multiple municipal police service jurisdictions, with no one agency covering the entire system.
